Setting Up Your Home Wireless Network
Posted by admin
For some many of us, having the computers in our home able to connect ‘wirelessly’ to each other, or the Internet, is very attractive. Besides, who wants to run all that wire to every room in which someone might want to use their laptop? Fortunately, setting up a home wireless network, either for sharing things like printers or for getting everyone online, doesn’t require a full scale IT department.
Your first step in reaching this goal is to get a wireless router. You have many choices here but before heading down to your local electronics store, check with your current Internet Server Provider (ISP). Many of them offer an upgrade from the cable modem they installed to a multi-port wireless router (with the cable modem built in). But if not, you have a wide range of reputable choices when deciding on a wireless router. And they’re all around the same price so best advice here is to stick with the known brands (ones like NetGear, Linksys, or Berklin). You may want to check with your ISP as they may recommend one that they’ve approved for use with their cable modem (which means their tech support staff can help you it setup).
Once you have the wireless router home, configuring it is not difficult. They all come with software that can guide you through the process step by step. Another hint here – be sure to assign a security key to your router. Remember, most of these routers have very good range. So unless you want the whole neighborhood using it (and the Internet access you are paying for), a security key is a good idea. In addition to the tech support team from your ISP, each wireless router comes with a tech support hotline that can get you connected quickly. Can’t get enough?
